Getting on the Same Page as Your Developer

Writer's picture: Paige CooperPaige Cooper

Ever hired a developer who seems confused by your requests? You describe what you want built, but keep getting blank stares or half-baked work. Makes you want to tear your hair out, right?

Don't freak yet! Misalignment with your dev team happens. But there are ways to get them up to speed...

First up, did you explain the big picture? Share the goal for the feature, desired outcomes, examples, priority level - the nitty gritty helps. Don't assume they just "get it." Spell it out!

If detailed specs don't do the trick, try a working session. Screenshare an existing site with what you want. Mockups and user flows also demonstrate visually what's in your brain. Collab directly to highlight gaps.

Encourage questions too! Silent developers won't tell you where they're stuck. Get them talking early before time goes down the drain. Explain any fancy jargon simply.

Lastly, maybe your work styles just don't mesh? A bit of adaptation on both ends can sync you up. But if it feels like constant headaches, your partnership may need rethinking.

With clear communication from you and speaking up from them, your vision can come together beautifully. But if requests keep getting lost in translation, it might be time to find a developer who really gets you. Trust me, it'll save your sanity!
